Hollister police last weekend arrested 29-year-old man after a vehicle chase on the city’s west side that resulted in the driver’s car going off a small cliff and landing in a ravine, according to the police department.
At about 2 a.m. Sunday, a Hollister police officer noticed a gray Honda Civic at a high rate of speed on South Street, while it turned out to be a stolen car. The pursuit moved its way to Buena Vista Road where the driver temporarily lost control of the car at two 90-degree turns in the road and continued to flee, according to police.
After continuing on a private road, the officer stopped the patrol car a “few feet” from the edge of a cliff. The suspect’s vehicle had gone off it and dropped about 50 feet into a ravine, according to the HPD.
The suspect crawled out and tried to escape, but was detained by police and sheriff’s deputies shortly after.
Police identified the driver as Angel Estrada, and reported that he is on parole and a known gang member.
Estrada was treated for his minor injuries and booked at the San Benito County Jail on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle, failure to yield to an officer with disregard to public safety, driving under the influence, possession of burglary tools, auto theft and parole violations.
