On March 5, the San Benito High School AVID club hosted its first Movie Night. The club, whose mission is to prepare and assist students in going to college, received complimentary tickets from the Premiere Cinemas Theater to host the event.

Prior to the movie, the nearly 100 students in attendance had the opportunity to hear from Gina Agredano, a doctor, as the featured speaker. Agredano, a 1989 graduate of San Benito High School who makes her home in Hollister, is a chief resident at the Natividad Medical Center Family Practice Residency Program in Salinas. Agredano shared her path through high school and college to becoming a physician. She highlighted the support of her family, teachers, and a special high school counselor, Jim Caffiero, in achieving great success in high school, allowing her to attend the University of California, Davis and then medical school at Michigan State University. She shared her endeavors as a teacher, fire-fighter, and nursing home aide prior to committing herself to a career in medicine.

This journey prompted the students to call her, “Super Woman.” She fielded several questions from the students, who were motivated to explore their own goals and progress towards attending college. Caffiero, who continues to work with students as a high school counselor, stood by Agredano’s side and echoed her message of preparing early for college.

“Do not let anything or anyone, even a special boyfriend or girlfriend, stand in the way of your dreams,” he said.

Agredano and Caffiero reminded the students that they can have a lot of fun and be active in high school while still achieving academic success and preparing for college. Nasarae Johnson, an SBHS senior and AVID club president, prepared a handout with college information. It included a timeline with steps to take in preparing for college and was distributed to the students by Johnson, AVID Club counselor Elizabeth Gutierrez, and AVID teachers Marlene Villegas and Renee Reed.
