The San Benito County Free Library invites all county residents to join in celebrating the launch of the new bookmobile and Summer Reading Program Kick-Off June 16 from 2 to 4 pm at the library at 470 Fifth St., Hollister.

Festivities will begin with bookmobile tours, summer reading program registration and Silly Ricky’s Juggling Show. At 2:30 p.m., the bookmobile will have its official launch with a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by a reception featuring the artwork of Carlos Munoz, the graphic designer of the bookmobile’s exterior mural. Crafts for children and an ice cream social open to all will round out the afternoon program, according to a press release from the library.

The June 16 art show features representative art pieces in acrylics, pencil, oils, and mixed media that illustrate Munoz’s broad range of styles. Munoz grew up in Hollister, received his bachelor’s degree in art from San Jose State University, and is recognized locally for his public art and contributions to the community. The theme of the bookmobile design is “On the road to growth and knowledge.” The bookmobile’s exterior “wrap” portrays the library’s many roles in changing lives and serving its diverse population. The mural’s background displays the natural beauty, living history and agricultural roots of San Benito County.

June 16 also marks the first day of the Library’s Annual Summer Reading Program. Children, pre-school through eighth grade, can register beginning at 2 p.m. for the “Be Creative @ the Library” Summer Reading Program. Children who complete their reading goal will receive a certificate, goodies bag, and paperback book. Teens entering grades sixth through 12 can register at the library or online for the ‘Express yourself @ the Library” Summer Reading Program. Teens who read four or more books, and complete an online review, will receive a gift certificate.

A broad range of programs and events are scheduled for all ages. For a complete listing of all our events, visit the library to pick up an events calendar or visit its Web site at sanbenitofl.org.
