Dear Editor:
I take issue with Dave McRae and the Free Lance with respect to the digital divide editorial to which Mr. McRae protests. It has been my experience that computer literacy, or lack thereof, is tied to users’ inability to manipulate the keyboard (typing skills) and the written word (language mechanics/syntax) which is not a bias against persons of any race, creed or color.
Mr. McRae’s contention that the Free Lance bashes Hispanics is unsupported in my view. Especially in light of the fact that the publication is under new ownership and has attempted to reach out to the community it serves by hosting community events in San Benito County.
Improving the literacy of citizens, young or old, by the donation of computer equipment to bridge the digital divide is a commendable first step. Advocating mastery of English literacy for successful career development in America is obviously a worthy goal.
Slinging accusations of racism and intolerance is an inappropriate, knee-jerk reaction better suited to characters in the media worthy of this criticism such as Jerry Springer, not the Free Lance newspaper.
