The top candidate for the expanded director role with the Economic Development Corp. of San Benito County is continuing to negotiate with the group over a potential agreement.

EDC board President George Lewis confirmed Tuesday that talks are still under way and said he expects the two sides will reach an agreement within a week before drawing up a contract for board members’ consideration.

“The offer’s been made and we are in negotiations,” Lewis said.

Lewis said they are ironing out the deal “from a tax point of view” and he added that “it might be advantageous (for the candidate) to have things arranged a little different.”

The 15-member EDC board chose its finalist after a committee reviewed resumes and whittled the list to five people. Two panels comprised of 11 people then interviewed those candidates and further narrowed the list to three applicants, one of whom got a different job before final talks with the EDC to pick the top choice.

EDC leaders and government officials have expressed optimism about the expanded, higher-paying role and how the right person could help recruit new businesses to the area during a crucial time for economic development.
