Kudos should go to the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office for their diligent efforts to track and account for the county’s registered sex offenders. A recent state report indicating the numbers of registered sex offenders in California on a county by county basis shows that San Benito County has one of the lowest percentages of unaccounted for offenders in California.

The statistics indicate that less than 5 percent are unaccounted for in San Benito County, while nearly 25 percent are unaccounted for in Santa Clara and a shocking 45+ percent in San Francisco.

One of the purposes of sex offender registration is to provide a deterrent to potential offenders via their ongoing contacts with law enforcement. Based on the above statistics, the people of San Benito County are well served by their short staffed and underfunded Sheriff’s Office.
