HOLLISTER

A jury trial for a Hollister resident accused of shooting his mother in the face, arm and hand – then later engaging in a standoff with police – is set for March 23.

Ruben A. Garcia, 41, is charged on suspicion of attempted murder and shooting his mother three times in June 2008 after an argument over finances. Two days after the confrontation, which his mother survived, Garcia had a four-hour standoff with police in a home near Cerra Vista School before turning himself in.

The jury trial initially had been set for March 9, but the district attorney’s office filed a motion for a continuance, which a judge granted today by moving the start date, said Gregory LaForge, Garcia’s public defender.
