The United Way has been absent in San Benito County for going on a decade, but its recent revival means there is another funding source for nonprofit organizations in the area.

The local branch has restarted – under the Community Foundation’s umbrella, and with an office in the nonprofit’s downtown building – with funding assistance from the Wolpert Foundation and the Wells Fargo Foundation, said Starr Wolf, the coordinator of the group.

The United Way has three areas of concentration – to give, advocate and volunteer – and the local nonprofit’s new board has selected three particular areas of its own where the funding will go for now. Those categories are “our youth,” “our families,” and “our residents.” Donors can choose to give toward one, two or all of the causes, she said.

Wolf underscored that for the first two years – due to additional help from the Packard Foundation – all of the money raised will go directly toward the chosen nonprofits. After the two years are up, the group will hold annual fundraisers, Wolf said.

“Every dollar makes a huge impact in our county,” she said, adding how no amount is too small.

For interested 501c3 nonprofit organizations, the deadline for requests for proposals – to obtain funding help – is 5 p.m. May 3. And in mid-June, the United Way expects to announce its partner agencies. The local group also is accepting additional board members, Wolf said.
