The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office has released identities of the two Sunnyvale residents killed in an accident Friday on Pacheco Pass Highway.
The victims were 29-year-old Yu Lin Wang and 32-year-old Jonathan Robert Page, according to the coroner’s office.
The driver whose 2004 Ford F350 pickup truck collided with the 2002 Honda Civic on Pacheco Pass shortly before 10 a.m. Friday noted to investigators after the wreck he had lost control of the Ford F350 and allowed it to veer into opposing traffic, according to the California Highway Patrol.
That pickup truck crossed the yellow line and struck the car, sending it down an embankment and killing the two Sunnyvale residents, said Officer Jaime Rios, spokesman for the CHP.
The driver of the dually-style truck was westbound on Pacheco Pass, about five miles southwest of Dinosaur Point, when he crossed to the other side of the road and collided head-on with the Honda, Rios said. The CHP in a press statement noted how he lost control and “allowed his vehicle to veer into opposing eastbound lanes of traffic.”
The pickup truck driver was 45-year-old Martin Teeling of Aptos. Teeling was uninjured in the accident and was talking to an investigator as authorities examined the area. The CHP is continuing to investigate, according to the agency. Rios could not be reached immediately Monday morning for the investigation’s status.
After the accident, Wang’s body was covered on the grass outside of the car – which faced the road after rolling down the hill – while responders initially tended to Page in the driver’s seat before pronouncing him dead.
The accident occurred on the Santa Clara County side of the highway. Calfire and San Benito County fire responded as well.
The CHP noted how it does not appear alcohol or drugs played a part in the accident and that the agency still is investigating it. All the involved residents were wearing seat belts, according to the CHP.
Friday’s accident added to a bad couple of weeks on the roads for the area. There were two fatal accidents on Highway 101 just six days apart, the first one two weeks ago. Also on Tuesday, another death occurred on Highway 156. A total of five people have been killed during the recent span.
