The Friends of the San Benito County Library held its annual meeting, at which county librarian Jo Wahdan made special presentations to some of the Friends Board members who have served the library, and in turn the county, for many years.

The group formed in 1980 and presents programs, speaker evenings, and library and literacy awareness. Members have raised funds through book sales, donations, membership dues and grants to supplement the county library’s ability to purchase special furniture, computers, computer accessories, books, special publications, world globes and videos. The group also helps raise money for the Adult Literacy Program, children’s and adult programs, Summer Reading Program and the help fund the bookmobile.

Many Board members have been speakers for service clubs, as well at City Council and Board of Supervisor meetings.

The following Board members were honored at the June meeting:

– Joyce Young was presented a five-year pin and certificate for her five-plus years on the Board as a member of the book sale committee and cashier, and for help in promoting the library.

– Angie Strohn has served more than five years as the Board’s treasurer. She has been on the book sale committee. Strohn was thanked for her creative implementation and ideas for special events and her eagerness to make sure everything is completed with detail and style.

– Richard Fish received a pin for his 10-plus years of service on the library’s Internet Advisory Group. Over the years, he has helped install and troubleshooting computer equipment, served as the county’s representative on the inter-county library commission, served as Friends president and attended conventions and workshops for the Friends and the library. Fish is the long-time newsletter editor.

– Harriet Brin also received a pin and certificate for her 10-plus years of service. She has served as secretary and chairperson of the book sale committee, and helped with special event booths, special speaker evenings and participated in Saddle Horse Show and Parade entries.

– Ruth Erickson received a 20-year pin and plaque for her service with the group. She has served on the Board as president, secretary, treasurer, newsletter editor, program organizer, presenting historical, cultural and international displays and programs for adults and children. Erickson has been involved in membership, fundraisers, parade float entries and public relations. She has also represented Friends and the library at conferences, to community groups, to the City Council and to the county Board of Supervisors.
