Around the Water Cooler

Question of the week: Do you agree with the existing ban in California against the commercial availability of horse meat?

Marty Richman: “No. Spare a horse, but eat a pig? With the proper safeguards horse meat should be available to the public, this is all about sentiment, not science.”

Richard Place: “I don’t think you should horse around with the beef market. Just think of all the problems from cattlemen beefing with the horsemen.”

Nants Foley: “Most of us don’t eat dog or horse.  Some cultures don’t eat pork, others eschew beef. Rabbits? Goats? All that said, I’d rather my lasagne not contain horse. The solution? Don’t buy processed foods! Eat local, eat seasonal and know what you are eating? I vote keep the ban on horse in  California.”

Ruth Erickson: “Beef patties mixed with ground horse meat have been detected in Ireland, imported from Poland, and is being investigated. It is banned in California, but is allowed in some states and various other countries. It should stay as a ban in California, but for those who wish to eat horse meat, they’ll just get it from states which allow it!”
