Around the Water Cooler

Richard Place: “I believe they take a better ethics course than the elected officials so I would have to say yes.”
Jim West: “Yes. But no one wants a ‘balanced’ government – each of us wants our own, individually biased government – and we brand anything that violates our personal philosophies ‘judicial activism’ and insist that it’s not ‘appropriate’ use of power.”
Mary Zanger: “No. The Supreme Court possesses inappropriate power in the Federal Government because of these court rulings. Today the court ruled against women by exempting employers from providing birth control in women’s health care coverage. The Citizen’s United issue ruled against the poor and middle class by allowing unlimited amounts of money to influence voters. The Court ruled against students, elderly and people of color allowing states to legislate obstacles to voting by requiring voter ID’s, disallowing same day registration and longer polling time and hours. It seems that too much power invalidates democracy.”
Ruth Erickson: “In the most part they seem to provide a balance of power in the federal government. However, in some instances, the Supreme Court is not stepping in early enough to stop violations of the constitution. Many people feel that certain cases that come before the Supreme Court, especially those involving individuals’ medical care, should not be decided by the courts, but by the individuals and their physicians.”
