Around the Water Cooler

Panelists this week answered the question: With Lance Armstrong dropping his appeal against doping charges, will it tarnish the reputation of his foundation that raises money to fight cancer?

Nants Foley: “Lance Armstrong survived testicular cancer and went on to become an amazing athletic inspiration. He then parlayed his fame into a force for helping others affected by cancer. Doping charges? So what. The foundation will hopefully continue its good work in the years to come. And, hey! I couldn’t bike like that no matter what I put in my body!”

Bill Mifsud: “Yes, the question I pose if he did not win all the Tour de France titles would he have been able to raise the millions his foundation has to date? Dropping his appeal means he is admitting to guilt and I would not donate to a his foundation when he is a fraud.”

Mary Zanger: “Sad that we will never know if the drugs netted were for cancer treatment or for an advantage. Unfortunately the withdrawal left a sting of doubt. This tarnishes Lance Armstrong’s accomplishments and smudges his foundation. With many charities fighting cancer and competing for fewer funds available, I think people will be inclined to choose other avenues of charity.”

Ruth Erickson: “Donated funds would go to the foundation not to Armstrong so hopefully people would still donate to the cause! Nike is still behind him. Armstrong’s been fighting the doping charges for 10 years with all negative test results. Where were all the accusing teammates for the past 10 years and were they all innocent? Armstrong says of the doping appeal that he is not guilty, but that he is tired of fighting for so long and wants to get on with his life.”
