Panelists answered the following: Do you believe there will be a positive impact from the nationwide protests over the Ferguson-related incident?
Mary Zanger: “Yes I believe that thousands of people marching non-violently and protesting will have a positive impact. This is what democracy is about. Protest marches have given us civil rights, voting rights, women’s rights and the end to the Vietnam War. This time people march to end racial profiling and police brutality.”
Richard Herrera: “No. I believe we will experience negative impacts. Hopefully, the violence will stop.”
Cesar Flores: “Impact, YES! Whether negative or positive depends on your point of view. National attention is being focused on what the Civil Rights Act of 1964 failed to eradicate. A large amount of people have felt strong enough about the issue to physically show their emotions. I do not condone the use of violence in any manner. Burning and looting does not fit under ‘Freedom of Speech.’”
Jim West: “God I hope so.”
Ruth Erickson: “Unfortunately, there are incidents happening in many parts of the country but only a few get the attention that Ferguson has had. The only positive outcome from this will be if law enforcement, governments and communities begin dialogue by coming together to understand each other. Only with understanding, education, cooperation, communication and by working together can those communities begin the healing process.”
