The San Benito County Water District was awarded a grant through the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) Field Services Program, according to a press release from the district. This program is available to water agencies that contract with the USBR. Water contractors compete for grant funds by submitting proposals that focus on water use efficiency. The district has partnered with the Water Resources Association of San Benito County to cost-share and coordinate the awarded grant.

This award will be added to local funds to provide water management classes for landscape irrigation professionals and agricultural water customers in San Benito County. Instructors from the Irrigation Training and Research Center at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo will come to our county to provide instruction. The classes are free to the public and will be held this week and in February 2010 for agricultural customers. The same classes will be offered again next year (2010-2011) since the classes only accommodate 20 participants and there was a big demand for the first series of classes.

A class for residential customers will be offered as well with such topics as Garden Design Concepts, Drought Tolerant Plants, Irrigation Basics for Homeowners, and Irrigation Scheduling and Maintenance. This class will be offered some time next spring and will be announced in late January, early February 2010. The district and the WRASBC’s goal is to promote efficient irrigation concepts and practices to help ensure long-term sustainability of our local water resources.
