Editor,

We all agree that there is an urgent need to build a flyover at 152/156. I don’t understand the opposition to the VTA plan. The argument that it would create more traffic in our county seems specious to me. I have noted when driving between Hollister and Salinas or Monterey that there are many trucks already using the 156 bypass of Hollister, taking them to 101 south beyond San Juan. They have already discovered a shortcut. Trucks headed for Gilroy or north would have no reason to take this route.

Trucks already using the 156 bypass do not come through Hollister. They only congest the two lane road past San Juan, which has already been proposed for four lanes. I would suggest that those who want to delay construction of a 152/156 flyover do a study (without taxpayer assistance) as to how much the VTA plan would really impact our county as opposed to their solution. My guess is that all the trucks that currently exit 152 onto the bypass would continue to do so instead of going straight ahead. Perhaps a few more would follow on weekends when there currently is a left turn wait at the Y intersection.
