Miracles can happen as anyone who has followed U.S. ice hockey knows.
The San Benito wrestling team got ready for the Central Coast Section playoffs by watching the newly released film “Miracle” on Wednesday.
But the Balers don’t have quite the same insurmountable odds as the 1980 Olympic team had.
“We have a very good chance of competing for a title,” said Baler coach Matt Olejnik. “Obviously, we have to have a lot of things go our way and have to have some help from other teams. There are always surprises at the scale. We are not going to be one of those teams, because we are ready to go.”
San Benito will be represented by 14 wrestlers in the CCS finals which began today. Olejnik said he expects at least 11 wrestlers to have legitimate chances to be in the finals on Saturday.
“Practice went real well this week,” Olejnik said. “We did double workouts where we were running and practicing. Everyone is anxious to get started.”
Olejnik said he is a little concerned about a couple guys making weight but expects them to all be ready for weigh-ins this morning.
The team left Thursday night and will be staying at Olejnik’s parents’ home just 15 minutes from Independence High School, so the grapplers can get a full night of sleep.
“Everyone’s healthy, and they are all in the right frame of mind,” Olejnik said. “For the seven seniors, it is their last opportunity. And some of the younger guys are looking to make a name for themselves for next year.”
