“Zoot Suit,” one of El Teatro Campesino’s most popular productions, is finding its way back to the local stage.
Written by the playgroup’s founder, Louis Valdez, “Zoot Suit,” tells a story revolvoing around the real-life events of the Sleepy Lagoon murder trial – when a group of young Mexican-Americans were wrongfully charged with murder – and the Zoot Suit Riots. The main character is Henry Reyna (inspired by real-life defendant Henry Leyvas), a pachuco gangster who, along with his gang, were unfairly prosecuted, are thrown in jail for a murder they did not commit. The play is set in the barrios of Los Angeles in the early 1940s against the backdrop of the Zoot Suit Riots.
The show will open with a series of preview performances beginning Friday, July 13 at 8 p.m. Additional preview dates are July 14 and July 19-20 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, July 15 at 2 p.m.
Opening weekend begins Saturday, July 21 at 8 p.m. Additional performances are Thursday through Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. through Saturday, Sept. 15 and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. through Sunday, Sept. 16.
Tickets are $30 for reserved seating. Tickets for the opening night performance are $125. Regular seating is $25 for adults, $22 for seniors and students and $18 for children. Group rates are available.
