Kristi Ward and Ryan Hatcher recently traveled to Washington, D.C. as delegates to the 4-H National Conference.

Ward and Hatcher, active members in the San Benito County 4-H program, were selected to participate with nine other 4-Hers from California in the national conference.

The 10-day conference began with an acquaintance event. On the second day, Ward and Hatcher took a tour of Gettysburg, learning about the three day battle and its significance to the Civil War. The pair and their group then went to the 4-H National Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Md.

While at the center, students participating in the conference had the opportunity to discuss and debate bills they created, tour national monuments, memorials and buildings. Ward and Hatcher also had the opportunity to meet Congressman Sam Farr.

Other activities enjoyed by the pair included a night of dinner theater in Baltimore, a visit to the Holocaust Museum, the National Archives and the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. They viewed the original written versions of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

At the end of the conference, Ward and Hatcher visited Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown before returning home.
