Around the Water Cooler

Panelists answered the following: Do you believe the economy is on the verge of a major upswing?
Mary Zanger: “Yes, on the verge but not over the top until more people are able to push the upswing. A start might be to ensure more teachers and classrooms for public education including free college or trade school. Another good start would be healthcare for all. These two goals alone would create jobs for teachers, staff, clerical, maintenance, builders, carpenters, electricians, doctors, nurses, all sorts of technicians and more, many of whom already have graduated from college with debts and sorely need jobs. I am reminding myself that Germany has created a new sector for jobs, which is building for renewable energy. Now see multitudes of new taxpayers upswinging the economy.”
Marty Richman: “No, the economy will continue to respond locally and regionally, rather than nationally. Some pockets and regions will see strong growth based on the business cycle and their specialized capabilities and contributions. Unfortunately, the ‘have-nots’ have the same fundamental problems they had before and their drag on the national economy and the overall debt burden will prevent a national recovery.”
Richard Herrera: “We have added more jobs, state and federal economy have improved and housing prices are higher. I believe our economy has improved but I’m not convinced it’s on the verge of a major upswing.”
Ruth Erickson: “Government statistics may show an upswing, but the average person doesn’t see it in their take home pay.”
Richard Place: “One of my great talents. Buy high and sell low. Now they lie high and sell high. Yea, I guess. Depends on how high they can lie.”
