Nearly 900 San Benito County third-grade students gathered at Bolado Park Tuesday morning for the 19th annual San Benito County Farm Day.
The annual event draws students from schools all over the county for a morning of activities that teach them about the largest industry in San Benito County – agriculture. The students have a chance to look at farm equipment, learn about ways plants are grown and to interact with a variety of farm animals.
At least 175 teachers, chaperones and volunteers are involved in putting on the day, which is coordinated by the San Benito County Farm Bureau. Volunteers included 4-H and FFA members who allow the kids a chance to check out their animals as well as those working in the ag industry in the county.
The teachers received a fact sheet that included information about agriculture in the county, including that there are 34 organic growers who grow 74 different crops.
The value of agricultural production in the county for 2010 was $255 million.
