The San Benito girls water polo team clinched fifth place inside the Monterey Bay League’s Gabilan Division on Thursday with a 13-8 victory over Salinas.

Caitlin Schafer scored a team-high eight goals, increasing her season total to 204.

Rachel Estep added three goals and Erin Hepner scored a pair of goals in the victory.

Goalie Rachel Smithee made 14 saves for the Balers in the victory.

The fifth-place finish gives the Balers an outside shot at a Central Coast Section at-large playoff berth. San Benito will find out Saturday if they were selected to the CCS playoffs.

SBHS Volleyball

San Benito dropped its final Monterey Bay League regular season game Thursday, falling 3-0 to Notre Dame.

The loss gives the Balers a 9-3 record inside the MBL and an overall record of 20-13. San Benito now awaits its seeding for the 2012 CCS playoffs, which start Wednesday.

AHS Cross-country

Thanks to a strong run of 16:22 by senior Diego Leon, the Anzar boys cross-country team took first in the Coastal Athletic League, defeating York 33-45.

Leon led a pack of three Hawks inside the top 10 to clinch the league title. Christian Monroy (17:31, fourth), Nat Hsia-Caron (17:48, sixth) and Diego Avila (17:51, eigth) paced the Hawks in the victory.

On the girls side, took first as well, beating York 42-54. Anzar finished with three runners inside the top six to come away with the victory in the season final meet.

Sophomore Yvette Felix ran the fastest time for the Hawks, placing third at 22:51. Teammate Ali Bautista finished six seconds behind Felix for fourth place. Sophomore Carly Zako rounded out the Hawks top times finished at 23:44 to place sixth.

AHS Volleyball

For the first time in school history, the Hawks, with a 12-2 league record, finished the regular season with a second-place finish in the Mission Trail Athletic League.

The Hawks clinched that feat Thursday with a dominant 3-0 victory over Gonzales (26-24, 25-21, 25-20). The Hawks will now enter the CCS playoffs with an impressive 23-5 record.

Anzar’s Raleigh McKinney finished with a game-high 18 kills in the victory. Setter Monica Medina finished with 28 assists. Mali Gonzalez, who finished with 38 digs, once again led the Hawks strong defense.

The Hawks now wait for their seeding for Wednesday’s CCS playoffs.
