Behind multi-hit games from Nick Salgado, Nico Mendoza, Brian Fredrickson and Josh Holtzclaw, the Anzar High baseball team rebounded from last week’s loss to Soledad by defeating host Jefferson City 11-4 on Tuesday in non-conference action.

Salgado, Mendoza, Fredrickson and Holtzclaw each chimed in with two hits apiece for the Hawks, who improve to 2-1 on the early season. Salgado, meanwhile, had a double and three RBI in the game, while Mendoza (3IP, 2H, 4R, 3ER, 3BB, 6K) tossed three innings to pick up the win.
Fredrickson (3IP, 1H, 0R, 0ER, 1BB, 7K) came in for relief and threw three scoreless innings. The two pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts against Jefferson.
The Anzar offense tallied more than enough run support in the first two frames of Tuesday’s contest, plating four runs in the first and three more in the second.
Jefferson, which is out of Daly City, tacked on a four-spot in the second inning to cut the deficit. But the Hawks responded with another run in the third inning and three more in the fourth to cruise to the seven-run victory.
Helping his own cause, Mendoza scored three runs for Anzar, while Salgado, Fredrickson, Holtzclaw and Andrew Ornelas each plated a pair.
The 11-run effort was a 180-degree difference from last Friday, though, when Anzar traveled south to Soledad (2-0). Limited to just three hits in the game, the visiting Hawks fell by a 9-0 margin to the Aztecs.
“He’s got a good squad this year,” said Anzar manager Andrew Barragan, who noted that the Hawks had three errors in the game, and also threw several pass balls and wild pitches with runners in scoring position.
Leading 1-0 after the first inning, Soledad blew the game open in the second with a five-run frame. It also added three more runs in the fourth inning.
Anzar will return to action on Saturday when it will again travel south to take on Gonzales (0-0). First pitch is 11 a.m.
“They’ve got a good squad, too,” Barragan said of the Spartans.
