About noon Friday, Calfire responded to a call for a fire in Aromas and, with assistance from the North Monterey County Fire Department and the Pajaro Valley Fire Department, found multiple pieces of debris on fire and two vehicles damaged by heat, according to a statement from Calfire.

Calfire described the illegal burning as a “20′ x 30′ vegetation fire and 2 inoperable vehicles damaged by heat and direct flame impingement.”

Firefighters quickly extinguished all fires on the property and stopped any flames from spreading to surrounding residences, according to the statement.

A Calfire prevention officer cited the property owner for illegal debris burning, and the suspect was taken into custody by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department for violations unrelated to the fire.

Calfire wants to remind the public that debris burning is done under permit by your local fire department, according to the statement.

The state agency noted how only certain items may be burned – for example, no household trash or garbage may be burned outdoors at residences.
