It was only for a few minutes, but Mark Carreiro was on the ride of his life.
Belly first on the “sandpaper” soil of Bolado Park’s arena, Carreiro was pulled and dragged as he held onto the rope for dear life, waiting for one of his two teammates to get milk from the cow on the other end.
Carreiro wasn’t the only person on the ground, as five other teams of three people tried with all their might to stop, or slow down, their individual 2,500-pound cows to milk it. It was wild, chaotic and painful for the 15 participants of the Wild Cow Milking, the second-last arena event on Sunday of the 78th annual San Benito County Saddle Horse Show & Rodeo at Bolado Park.
For a hometown rodeo where the contestants are mostly all local, the filled-to-capacity grandstands had their fair share of laughs.
Despite Carreiro sacrificing his button-down shirt and stomach, his team finished in fourth.
“It’s not fun,” he said. “It’s definitely for the crowd and not us.”
He continued: “It’s a good laugh. We just have to hold on and see what happens.”
The contest got off to a furious start. As the cows left the gates, they ran wildly around the arena, with three cowboys hanging on. Contestants were thrown off the cows’ backs and were dragged around the arena.
Despite the flurry, the action lasted barely five minutes.
As two teams finished the milking of the cows and raced toward the judge, the winners appeared to be A.J. Johnson and his team also made up of Scott Spencer and Ross Ketcham – until Johnson lost his footing.
Merely feet away from the judge, Johnson tumbled, rolling in the dirt and spilling his glass of milk. Right behind him was the winning team of Mark Costa, Allan Renz and Chris Rotticci.
Overall, including festivities from the previous two days, Costa, Renz and Rotticci finished second, but remained victorious Sunday.
Afterward, all they wanted was some alcohol.
“Do you have a shot of whiskey?” Costa asked as he slowly walked out of the arena.
His teammates Renz and Rotticci followed, as they tried to swipe away the remains of the dirt arena off their clothes.
“It’s tough to hold on to those animals when they are that big,” Renz said. “They were really big this year.”
Renz explained that the competition has gotten harder and harder each year, after a rule change three years ago took away the help of horses.
“It’s a little unfair,” he said. “A big cow against three of us. We don’t stand a chance.”
