A colony of bees and their queen created a gigantic beehive in a tree adjacent to a public parking lot near Hollister City Hall.

The hive developed last week, and the City of Hollister streets division was warned about the problem. It was connected to a tree on a small grassy plot next to the Sixth Street public parking lot along Wentz Alley between Fifth and Sixth Street.

City crews Friday promptly removed the hive, which was protected closely by the array of swarming bees around the tree. Early this week, there were some remnants of the bee colony, but the large hive had been relocated.

A city streets division official could not be reached immediately about the removal.
