The San Juan Bautista City Council recently awarded a contract to convert the city’s streetlights to energy-efficient bulbs.

The deal now awaits approval of a federal grant that will finance the approximately $25,000 project.

The 75 to 80 streetlight conversions are expected to provide the city with “substantial savings” in electricity, according to City Manager Roger Grimsley.

The new lights will have the same basic illumination, he noted, but with a slight change in color. Approval of the grant to fund the conversion is expected within the next month.
