Purple Cross Rx, the medical marijuana dispensary that is battling San Benito County in order to stay open on Bolsa Road, is conducting a holiday toy and food drive through Christmas Eve.

Scott McPhail, the Purple Cross director, encouraged people to stop by the dispensary to donate canned food, gently-used clothes or unwrapped toys.

Asked if he has partnered with local charities or organizations, he said, “I tried but I got some resistance from some of them.”

Instead, he expects to donate items to the Salvation Army or a local food bank.

Purple Cross, which opened on the busy thoroughfare between Hollister and Gilroy the day after Christmas 2010, is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 1980 Bolsa Road.

Check in next week for a story on the ongoing legal battle between the county and Purple Cross.
