Police will be out in force for the next three weeks, looking for drunken drivers. Beginning last Friday and running through Jan. 2, law enforcement officers will conduct DUI checkpoints and institute saturation patrols, looking to take impaired drivers off the road, according to a press release from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department.

Multiple DUI/ driver’s license checkpoints and roving DUI patrols are scheduled locally in partnership with law enforcement statewide and around the county during the winter holiday anti-DUI campaign known locally as “Avoid the 13.”

“You cannot spread holiday cheer from behind the bars of a jail cell,” Gilroy Police Chief Denise Turner said. “Don’t let your 2011 holiday season end in an arrest or worse, death. Remember, whether you’ve had way too many or just one too many, it’s not worth the risk.”

In December 2009, there were 753 people were killed nationwide in crashes that involved drivers or motorcycle riders with blood alcohol concentrations of .08 or higher. In California, 57 individuals died on the state’s streets and highways.

“The message is simple, ‘drive sober or get pulled over. Drinking alcohol or being under the influence of drugs, do not mix with driving. If you plan to consume alcohol, you should not get behind the wheel of a vehicle or ride a motorcycle,” Chief Turner added.

The program is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety.
