San Benito County Administrative Officer Susan Thompson announced her retirement Thursday in a letter to the San Benito County Board of Supervisors.

Thompson called the last five years “the highlight of my career” before she wrote she would walk away from her desk on Oct. 9.

She will stay on until the completion of the 2010-11 fiscal budget is completed, she said. The five-month advance will allow the board and Thompson some time to search for a successor.

Thompson wrote: “We have crossed many bridges together over the last few years, and I couldn’t be more proud of our work. While there have been and continue to be many challenges facing us, I truly believe that as a team we have built and maintain an extraordinary healthy organization capable of meeting the challenges of the future effectively.”

Thompson worked in public service for 32 years, and has spent the last five years in San Benito County.
