After returning to the postseason for the first time since 2007, and finishing in third place in the Tri-County Athletic League, the San Benito Haybalers officially wrapped up a strong 2010 campaign this week when it earned four all-league selections, including a pair of first-team nods.

Baler seniors Nick Angulo and Trevor Agan were named first team all-TCAL after leading San Benito on the attack and in the cage, while Josh Schafer earned second-team honors and Tyler Reuther was named to the sportsmanship team.

Angulo scored a whopping, team-high 124 goals and added 20 steals this season for the Balers, who finished with a 7-2 record in the TCAL. Coupled with his 104 goals scored and 19 steals as a junior, Angulo finished his varsity career at San Benito High with 228 goals scored and 39 steals.

Joining Angulo on the first team list was Agan, the team’s keeper for the last two years. Agan made 152 saves in the cage this season for the Balers, and made 167 saves last year as a junior, giving him 319 saves for his varsity career.

Angulo and Agan were just two of the 12 selections on the first team, though, which was comprised of a league-high four members from TCAL champion Carmel, including Ben Evered, Brady Hopkins, Jay Louis and Ben Price.

Padres head coach Aaron Gailey was named Coach of the Year in the TCAL after leading Carmel to an undefeated 9-0 record this season, while senior Brian Morton of Salinas was named the league’s Most Valuable Player.

Morton was also a first-team selection for the Cowboys, and was joined by teammates Jacob Bassetti and Chris Hunsdorfer, while Stevenson’s Beau Bayless, Tucker Forbes and Connor Stuewe rounded out the first team selections.

San Benito junior Josh Schafer was the Balers’ lone second team selection. Other choices included Carmel’s Emilio Eizner, Joe Hamwey and Ben Regan; Alex Degregori of Alvarez; Brandon Irby of Christopher; Michael Shields of Gilroy; Monterey’s Casey De Leuw and Matt Nutall; Palma’s Nick Yeo; and Salinas’ Nick Leighton and Ethan McDaniel.

Meanwhile, San Benito junior Tyler Reuther was named to the TCAL’s Richard Chamberlin Sportsmanship Team, an award that was given out to one member from each team, including Hugo Lopez of Alvarez, Ben Regan of Carmel, Octavio Cisneros of Christopher, Michael Shields of Gilroy, Conner Fowler of Monterey, Jacob Gumke of Palma, Jake Verania of Salinas, Beau Bayless of Stevenson and Lawrence Choi of Watsonville.

After earning the No. 3 seed in the TCAL this season and finishing in third place in the year-end tournament, the Balers advanced to the Central Coast Section Division I Championships for the first time since 2007. Seeded No. 12, however, the ride was short-lived as the Balers fell in their opening round contest to No. 5 Monta Vista, 14-9.

Schafer led the Balers with a team-high five goals and Angulo added four scores for San Benito, which finished its season with a 13-12 overall record. The team will graduate four seniors from this year’s team, including Angulo, Agan, Pat Maguire and Danny Jarrett.
