Dear Editor,

Friends of the San Benito County Free Library would like to thank the community for their support for the past 30 years.

The “Friends” celebrated their 30 year anniversary on October 20 during National Friends of Libraries Week, October 17-23, with the community.

Congratulatory awards were received from Congressman Sam Farr, Senator Jeff Denham, Assemblywoman Anna Caballero, San Benito County Supervisors, Hollister City Council and from San Benito County Free Library.

The “friends” also thanked Carlos Munoz and Joan Sattler for their creative work in making possible, two awards from the Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations (ALTAFF). The awards are given to Friends groups for outstanding publicity and marketing materials that promote the group, its programs and projects.

Two students won our essay contest telling us why libraries are their best friends. Mia Vodanovich won from San Benito High School and Riley Scherr won the junior high award from Sacred Heart School. Talented students from from five different schools participated and we are very proud of them all.

County Superintendent of Schools, Mike Sanchez, County Supervisors, Reb Monaco, Margie Barrios and Jaime De La Cruz were in attendance along with County Librarian, Nora Conte, library staff, Friends and community members. Congratulatory speeches were made thanking the Friends and Volunteers for all the years of contributions of time, talent and fundraising for library materials, furniture, technology, and other items to augment what is not in the library’s budget.

Music by David Huboi and Vince Zuniga from “Luke’s Groove, refreshments and tours rounded out the evening. The friends and I look forward to the next 30 years, of serving the library and the community.
