The Fourth of July is set to go off with a bang with the annual fireworks show, beginning at dark Saturday. The show will start around 9:15 p.m. from the field behind Marguerite Maze Middle School, City Clerk Geri Johnson said.

The fireworks are being put on the Fourth of July Celebration Committee and paid for by fees from the “safe and sane” fireworks sellers. Each vendor has to pay a fee to the city that goes toward funding the fireworks, Johnson said.

A dozen local nonprofit agencies – including San Benito High School’s band, Hollister Little League and Pop Warner football – pay the city $600 to operate booths that sell “safe and sane” fireworks within the city limits. Fireworks will be available for sale until July 4.

Also on the Fourth of July, there will be a Kiddie Parade. At 10 a.m., the characters Uncle Sam and Betsy Ross will lead kids from the commuter parking lot at Veterans Memorial Park to the Marguerite Maze Middle School parking lot for punch and cookies. All children in attendance will receive a free flag and are encouraged to dress in red, white and blue. No registration for the parade is necessary and participants only need to show up.

The events are being sponsored by the Fourth of July Celebration Committee, the San Benito County Chamber of Commerce, the City of Hollister and McDonald’s.

As a final recommendation, Johnson said she “encourages the use of ‘safe and sane’ fireworks” sold locally and she said “don’t use illegal fireworks.”
