San Benito County students made slight or significant gains in English, history, math and science on the state’s Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) results released today.

Overall in the county, students on last year’s testing in second through 11th grade experienced slight increases in scoring on English, math and science testing, with a nearly 10 percent jump in the history section, according to the results.

The results aren’t astounding, but there is a consistent improvement seen in the scores over the prior year. In the Hollister School District, 50.2 percent of students were proficient or advanced in English, up from 43.7 percent the prior year. Math scores increased in the Hollister district, meanwhile, by 4.5 percent to 50.2 percent of students being proficient or advanced, according to the data.

In the San Benito High School District, the percentage of students proficient or advanced in English actually dropped by about 2 percent to 39.5 percent, while Math scores dropped about 4 percent to 12.7 percent of students meeting that standard and science scores there increased by about 7 percent to just over 52 percent being proficient or advanced, according to the reports.
