A local couple’s horse was one of only seven nationwide to win the most prestigious award in its age group.
Cynthia and Brian Holthouse’s show horse Boons Royal Legacy, a roan-colored stallion, won the Supreme Reined Cow Horse award from the National Reined Cow Horse Association.
Getting to this top level requires obtaining a certain level of winnings at different age groups up until the bridal stage at which Boons Royal Legacy won its award, which the couple received in Texas in late February.
Most of the big-money winnings are in lower age divisions, making it even more extraordinary these days to last until the bridal category and receive the Supreme distinction, Cynthia Holthouse said.
That highest age group keeps the tradition alive, she said.
“So people continue to show these horses – and that’s why it’s such a special award,” said Holthouse, who lives on San Juan Canyon Road with husband Brian and two children, Clint and Sarah.
The competitions involve various disciplines of reining horses with a lot of fast stops and cuts and spins involved.
The couple have been raising horses together since they got married in 1986.
