Hollister Motorcycle rally organizers have taken advantage of the extra few months for the second go-around, as promoter Seth Doulton estimated his company is 25 percent to 30 percent ahead of 2007.
That extra time might be needed to recruit workers for the 2008 rally, however, because organizers have received commitments from only about half the employees – paid at $10 an hour – as they hope to get before the July event.
Doulton’s business, Horse Power Promotions, became the city’s first private organizer of the city’s signature event last year and brought a different feel to the streets – as the main drag became more of a merchant center – and a more methodical way of running the show.
Doulton on Monday also expressed excitement about Horse Power obtaining two new national sponsors – Jack Daniels and Geico – and about 30 or 35 more vendors than last year at this time.
He’s also pumped about securing more planned motorcycle rides, a biker paradea barbecue cookoff in San Juan Bautista and a Sunday biker blessing at the Mission.
Yet, while planning is running smoothly for the most part after a shortened time frame for getting things together in 2007, Doulton remains somewhat frustrated about the lack of manpower.
Doulton alluded to Horse Power’s first-time partnership in 2008 with the San Benito County Chamber of Commerce – which also reached out to spur interest – on the rally as a reason he’s even more baffled by the lack of applicants.
“We still have a lot of holes to fill on that,” said Doulton, adding that most of the jobs are focused on simple tasks such as working at information booths and offering directions to people.
