Another fair goes in the books
Another successful Salinas Valley Fair has come and gone, and
hopefully it took the big heat wave along with it! I can’t remember
a fair that has ever been that hot. It was over 100 degrees almost
everyday of the fair. But, other than the heat, the fair was
fantastic.

Many South County residents participated in the fair, kids and adults alike. Bitterwater 4-H members had a great fair as they received many blue ribbons for their entries in beef, swine, cooking and photography. The club received the Best of Show award for its feature booth. Betty Barrington and Cynnie O’Connor had several blue ribbons for their entries in cooking and photography and Betty was on hand several days demonstrating how to spin wool.
The L.A. Hearne Championship Bull Riding event was another big success on Saturday night. Missing from the event was local cowboy John Flook who was injured in a bull-related accident earlier in the week. He has spent several days in the hospital but is said to be heading home later this week. Get well soon John! Congratulations to Sarah and Katie Brewen for winning the stick horse races during the bull riding.
Johnny Joe and Darlene Maggini were able to beat the heat wave last week as they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Hawaii. They had nice weather over there, not as hot as it was here! Unfortunately, the volcano was really acting up while they were there so there was a lot of smoke in the air the whole time they were there. They didn’t see the sun a lot but they had a great time anyway.
Apparently I caused quite a stir from last week’s column with my restaurant opinions. I got quite a few reactions from folks as I walked through the fair. The reactions were equally split, 50/50. Some folks agreed 100 percent with my opinions on both restaurants, very few others disagreed. I was simply stating my opinion on the local food choices. I do know though that if I was in the food business, I would definitely want my ratings to be better than 50/50 with the local community!
Birthday wishes go out to Alice Gaunt who celebrated a birthday last week with family and friends at Lawrence’s Restaurant. According to Roberta Oswald who attended the celebration, the food and service at Lawrence’s was wonderful. Giving the benefit of the doubt, we must have been there on a rough night and we will give it one more try.
Have a great week, and, be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at we********@ao*.com with any news you’d like to share.
