The new emergency department and support services buildings at Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital are “moving along really well,” said Frankie Arballo, marketing and public relations director.

The emergency room facility, which will have more than 13,000 square feet of space, is scheduled for completion in November 2009. The support services building will have many different departments, including engineering and maintenance, marketing and public relations and the hospital foundation. The facility is scheduled for completion in the late spring/early summer of 2009.

Currently, 75 percent of the foundation is poured for the emergency department building and all the piers are completed, according to a report from the assistant inspector. Painting of the walls and structural steel will be completed at the end of September or beginning of October. Future construction will include exterior stud framing and trenching for gas lines. Builders also hope to start constructing the ER generator pad soon.

Additionally, the inspector hopes to have the ER driveway opened next week, Arballo noted.

Said Arballo: “We are excited about the opportunities the ER will offer to the community.” She added that everything is pretty much running on schedule.

Both of these facilities were made possible by Measure L. The $31.5 million bond issue was passed in May 2005. Funding for the 30-year bond came from assessed values on properties in San Benito County. The tax is $14.95 for every $100,000 of assessed value.

With things moving smoothly, Arballo said, “We’re pleased with the progress of the projects.”
