HOLLISTER

A deputy found a rifle, ammunition and knives in a student’s truck Monday afternoon at San Benito High School, resulting in the arrest of the 17-year-old male, said sheriff’s Lt. Roy Iler.

At 1 p.m., a school resource officer at San Benito High School was contacted by a school official who had received a report of ammunition in a vehicle parked in the student parking lot, Iler said. The resource officer, who is a sheriff’s deputy, went to the truck where he observed shotgun shells in plain view, as well as a closed gun case.

The resource officer contacted the student who admitted to having a rifle and ammunition for it in the vehicle, the sheriff’s official reported. A check of the vehicle confirmed there was a rifle and revealed two knives as well. The shotgun shells were also live rounds, but no shotgun was in the vehicle, Iler said.

The juvenile was arrested for being a minor in possession of ammunition, being a minor in possession of gun, possession of a gun on school grounds, and possession of knives on school grounds. He was booked into juvenile hall.

“Even in a car, if there are weapons on school grounds, it’s worse than just illegal possession,” Iler said. “This is a zero-tolerance situation.”
