Warming it up

Whether you are practicing putting or warming up before a round some ways of starting are better than others. Here are a few ways that can help you get more out of both.

The first thing you want to do is get control of the speed at which you roll the ball; remember if you hit the ball off line but get the speed right you will have a much easier putt coming back. On the other hand, if you hit the ball over the hole but roll it fifteen feet by it, you are looking at a three-putt. So don’t start to putt towards a target until you have speed control.

Here is something I have watched Tom Watson do three years in a row. Every time I saw him he was on the lowest part of the putting green putting uphill. One night after his round he was on the putting green at Pebble Beach with his caddy and I asked him why. He said he always wanted to first get the feeling of his putter head accelerating through the ball, and once he got that feel he moved to a flatter part of the green.

So the next time you practice or warm up before a round keep this drill in mind and when you come and play at Eagle Ridge you will not have any problem finding an uphill putt to practice, or down hill for that matter. Play well.

Don’t forget Eagle Ridge is now part of the Mini Rewards Program. When you join you receive substantial discounts not only at Eagle Ridge but Laguna Seca and Rancho Canada East and West.
