Your editorial about saving water (“Let’s Save Water Before It’s Too Late,” May 15) was well taken.
However, your suggestion to save water from the shower while it warms up, and to use it on the lawn, won’t work for those of us near Best Road.
Wells in the area contain trace amounts of boron – just enough to kill grass and other plants. I know. I tried to water my landscaping with it and watched everything die.
These wells also contain high levels of dissolved solids. In fact there was a famous mineral spring half a mile away. People took the train from San Francisco to bathe there.
That bit of history might make a good story for the Free Lance.
Water quality is one of the reasons we want to connect to Sunnyslope County Water District.
The other is that our water is expensive. The cost to pump it out of the well is low, but we must have a state certified operator to test it and run our treatment plant, along with an accountant, a tax person, insurance, etc. All this for 18 homes.
We hope that the Gavilan College plan will include a Sunnyslope connection for our subdivision.
San Benito County has almost 100 water companies, most of which are small ones like ours. This makes no sense.
Why did the Board of Supervisors approve these subdivisions without a connection to a water company that was large enough to furnish good water at a reasonable price?
The cost of running our water company was concealed by the developer until the last home was sold.

Rose Lovers Can Enjoy Work of 4-H Club at Dunne Park

The Fairview 4-H Club has been doing many community service things this year.
One of our big projects we have done is taking care of the rose garden at Dunne Park. We have been taking care of the roses for over eight years.
Every year in January the club prunes the roses. As a result of our hard work you can see the beautiful blooming roses in Dunne Park now.
This year the city so kindly donated a sign honoring the Fairview 4-H club for our hard work in maintaining the rose garden.
Each year we purchase the new rose bushes as needed.
Fairview 4-H really enjoys helping out the community.
We hope to keep the rose pruning going for many years to come, so that you we can all continue to smell the roses.
