Salinas – The San Benito Haybalers swept the competition on Monday, while the Lady ‘Balers took first in two of three matchups at a 3-team cross country meet at Toro Park in Salinas.

The Haybaler boys defeated Palma 25-32, upended North Salinas 15-45, and beat Everett Alvarez 15-45.

The Lady ‘Balers provided a strong showing as well, beating North Salinas 21-35, defeating Alvarez 19-36, but fell to Notre Dame 24-32.

“They did real well,” boys coach Jess Morales said. “They’re bouncing back up to where they should be. They adapted real good and we came out hungry and did things we needed to do.”

Individually, the ‘Baler boys took six of the top nine spots at Toro Park, with Adrian and Erik Rodriguez finishing in second and third place, respectively. Adrian clocked a 17:24.78, while his brother finished in 17:26.18.

Frank Rivera took fifth at 17:30.50, and teammates Eddie Guzman, Lance Villasenor and Curtis Wright crossed the finish line for the three-mile course in seventh, eighth and ninth place.

For the Lady ‘Balers, Courtney Allen found herself at the top once again, recording a time of 19:53.22, good enough for first place.

San Benito’s Vanessa Farias took seventh at 21:57.84, and teammates Elizabeth Moreno and Annmarie Rich finished in ninth and 10th, respectively.

Dayna Casillas and Megan Garratt rounded out the Lady ‘Balers on Monday.

“Little by little, the times will come down,” Morales said. “They put it together. They came out and ran respectably. Hopefully this weekend, we’ll step it up.”

The cross country team will head to the Stanford Invitational this Saturday in Palo Alto.

“Oh, it’s huge,” Morales said of the Stanford invite. “Overall, the team is getting better. They know what it’s all about now.”
