Dear Editor,

The article in the November 14 Free Lance about the Denham recall had considerable spin. The Democrats said Denham broke his promises to support education and levee repairs by opposing the state budget. Denham did support the bond measures for education and levee repairs. His opposition to the budget was because it was way out of balance.

Denham honored his oath of office to uphold the state Constitution. The state Constitution requires a balanced budget.

This was the basis of Denham’s opposition to the unbalanced budget, not education or levee repairs. Apparently the Democrats had no problem breaking their oath of office and voting for an unbalanced budget.

On November 15, the Free Lance buried an article below the fold on page 3 that reported the “State’s deficit balloons to $10 billion amid slowing economy.”

The San Jose Mercury has this as the headline on page 1. California will have expended its reserves and will be $2 billion in the red if spending is not reduced for the remainder of this fiscal year.

Governor Schwarzenegger has requested all departments to submit budgets for the next fiscal year that are 10 percent below this year. There will probably be another assault on the Williamson Act (agriculture property tax) next year. That could have a very negative impact on San Benito County.

It appears Jeff Denham was correct for being fiscally responsible. We need more like him.
