Editor,
I would like to thank Coach Randy Logue for his letter to the editor regarding the California High School Exit Exam and Intelligent Design. Coach Logue restores my faith in educators by being unafraid to step out of the box into which the state educational system has attempted to pigeonhole both students and educators. Coach Logue’s description of the multiple forms of teaching and why the CAHSEE fails the system is on target and should be noted and addressed.
I further commend Coach Logue for raising the issue of Intelligent Design and supporting giving kids the opportunity to hear all theories and formulate their own opinions. Last time I checked, America was still a free country and our citizens still had the right to think for themselves. What do evolutionists need to hide from? That they cannot allow intelligent persons to learn and draw conclusions from alternative viewpoints? What are they scared of? Do they perhaps think that their own “science” might fail?
Personally, while I do not discard all of evolution theory, I only accept it as theory, as basic cellular and genetic science alone defuncts much of evolution theory. With the possible exception of brainless tadpoles becoming members of the State Board of Education and the leftwingers who want to flaunt their own rights and beliefs at the expense of others, I have serious doubts that man developed from a fish. However, regardless of my personal beliefs, I certainly have no desire to interfere with my children’s ability to draw their own conclusions. I also have nothing to fear from it.
American students have the right to be given the opportunity to learn about all subjects and theories. The possibility of Intelligent Design is no more religious than a belief in evolution. The belief in nothing is every bit a belief system as the belief in Someone. And the belief in an Intelligent Design is a system that deserves the same respect as evolution.
Again, I thank Coach Logue for the chutzpa to speak up on behalf of students and teachers. Hollister is very fortunate to have a great number of exceptional teachers at SBHS and Coach Logue certainly ranks among the top.
