Editor,

When the Library Vision Committee met at the end of January, we concluded that we need to get ideas from our community about how to improve our library. We know we are below the state standard of one square foot of library space and two library books for every county resident. The county’s population has tripled since the library was built in 1959, and books on disc had not been invented! Our library, like many others, is at the point where we can’t take in new books without getting rid of old ones to make room. The building’s electrical system was not constructed for the computer age either.

We know the California Reading and Literacy Improvement and Public Library Construction and Renovation Bond Act will be on the June 2006 state ballot. We’re not guaranteed any money from the Act, even if it passes, we know. But with a new county librarian to be hired in the coming months, we are gearing up to be ready for the chance to qualify for the 65-35 percent matching grant.

Our county’s library users, from the people who use the Internet here to the schoolchildren who want to improve their reading, need a better facility.

I’d appreciate hearing from people with ideas. We welcome your membership, your support as volunteers and your opinions! I invite you to join the Friends of the Library. We meet on the third Thursday of the month; our next meeting will be February 16, 12pm, Barbara Memorial Room.
