How to heat up the Fourth

What better way to celebrate our independence than to do a local fun run. The Freedom 5000 race in Morgan Hill will be held this July 4 as a part of the Independence Day celebration. The course is relatively flat and fast.

The race begins at P.A. Walsh Elementary located at 353 W. Main St., Morgan Hill. What’s great is this run includes a 5k run/walk and a 1-mile run for children 11 and under, so it’s a family affair.

New and experienced runners can do a healthy run, enjoy our independence, and eat a yummy breakfast. To register go to www.mhidi.com or www.theschedule.com.

Many South Valley Running Club members recently participated in the Happy Hollow run again this year. Locals had fun splashing through streams and running along creeks and on park trails.

If you’re looking for places to run, one great way to keep in shape this summer is the Coyote Creek Trail.  It starts at the Park Ranger Station, which is located at the end of Maliguera. (From 101, take Cochran east towards the Anderson Dam and where the road turns right; Maliguera is the street to the left).  Go about three blocks on Maliguera and that takes you onto the parking lot near the Ranger Station.

The trail starts right there and continues for quite a few miles into San Jose. Some runners just head out for a mile or two and then head back.

Several local SVRC members have run 16 miles of this trail. The beauty of our local terrain is enchanting. Quail skitter across now golden grasses. Coyote Creek Trail’s surface is all asphalt and that is a better surface to run on than concrete. (Actually it’s four times more cushioned). Remember to stay hydrated, wear a cap and sunscreen to keep those sunrays off your cheeks, run with a buddy and enjoy.
