San Juan Bautista – Anzar used a big second quarter Tuesday to pull away from visiting Anchorpoint Christian to win its season opener 72-38.
Ahead by one point after one quarter, the Hawks outscored the Warriors 23-5 for a 37-18 lead at halftime. James Henrard led the surge with 11 points and Scott Benson backed him with seven.
Benson led Anzar with 25 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks. Henrard added 18 points and eight assists. Eric Olson scored 11 points.
Adrian Rodriguez had 13 points and Victor Rodriguez added eight for Anchorpoint.
“It was a good opener for us,” said Anzar coach Ed Cecena. “They couldn’t match our size. Once we started pressing, were able to open things up. It was good to see our kids executing what we are teaching.”
Girls Basketball
Hollister – San Benito couldn’t overcome Harbor’s height advantage and fell 48-38 in its home opener Tuesday.
With three Harbor girls taller than 6-feet, ‘Balers coach Al Rowe had his team looking more to the perimeter.
While the plan worked to an extent with San Benito shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc, the ‘Balers couldn’t stop the Pirates’ Olive Kersey, who poured in a game-high 21 points.
Shireen Zimani led the way for San Benito with 11 points and nine rebounds. Vanessa Farias had a team-high 14 points and Elena Fata had 13 for the ‘Balers.
Boys Soccer
Monterey – Once again the shots wouldn’t go in for San Benito and it fell to Monterey on the road 2-1 on Tuesday.
After a scoreless first half, senior Eddie Trujillo gave the ‘Balers a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick, but the Toreadors scored twice to keep San Benito winless.
“We are missing a lot of shots,” coach Juan Carlos Martinez said. “We have a lot of opportunities but they are not going in.”
