I would like to correct Mr. Velazquez on his comment as to why he lost the 28th Assembly race. It certainly is a lot easier for him to jump on the bandwagon and blame his political loss on the national issues of the Republican Party. Instead, Mr. Velazquez should have the integrity to take full responsibility for the effect of his negative campaigning.

Take Positive Action, Citizens

Not long ago an unsuspecting local youth was intentionally run over and killed by another youth. The newspaper story was luridly detailed but the assassins background was vague and there was no thoughtful editorial about the deeper cause of violence in our society.
Questions that come to mind are:
1. Where is the outrage by citizens about such a brutal crime?
Have we become so desensitized by the violence of so-called entertainment that the extremely vicious murder of one youth by another goes quietly to the archives?
2. Other questions arise: What role do a boy’s parents or guardians play in such a crime? What other social factors contribute to youth violence in this country?
I think it is high time for us to seek answers to these questions and take action to address them. When we do, we will help turn our society from a lawless direction.
Responsible citizens, take a look at what effects trashy television and movies have on the behavior of today’s youth. Wise, loving parents see the pernicious effects garbage entertainment has on viewers.
Other social phenomenon poise questions that should be held to the light. What part do things such as rules at school, rap music, family harmony, and parental responsibility play in the mix that bears on youth behavior? I say each play a part and their long-term effect has deep-seated and far-reaching consequences.
Fellow citizens, take a positive, uplifting action today. You can make a difference.
