Hollister – The San Benito High boys soccer squad bounced back big time from its 3-0 loss against North Salinas last week in its TCAL opener with a 6-1 thrashing of visiting Salinas on Friday afternoon.

The Balers controlled the ball and the game’s tempo from the opening whistle. They promptly set up shop on Salinas’ end of the field and, before the contest’s 15th minute had expired, got a goal from Jose Diaz off a spectacular assist by Mauricio Campos, whose blinding speed on the offensive end created problems for the Cowboys all day long.

Diaz wasn’t satisfied with only one goal though. Not long after the game’s initial score, Diaz struck again. And once again, it was Campos who notched the assist. Only this time, Campos didn’t need to use his wheels to get a pass into Diaz, he used his aim on a corner kick to find the shooter.

Once the Diaz-Campo show had done its thing, it was Frankie Frutos’ turn to put the ball into the Salinas net. Frutos, a football player for the Balers earlier this season, scored the team’s third goal on an assist from Arturo Ceja.

Christian Mercado tallied the team’s fourth goal after rebounding a corner kick, sent in by Ceja, and putting it past the Cowboys’ goalkeeper.

Jamie Torres finished the team’s scoring with a pair of goals late in the contest. Ricardo Perez assisted on the first and Mercado assisted on the second.

The San Benito defense did a great job of keeping Salinas away from their goal as Eduardo Trujillo only needed to make three saves in the Balers’ net.

Note: Head coach Juan Carlos Martinez was forced to sit Friday’s game out after receiving a red card in the North Salinas contest. Martinez was carded for arguing with officials, who he says were missing calls all game in addition to referring to the North Salinas players by their first names. Martinez is back on the sideline for today’s game.
