Dear Editor,
Last November, after we took a vacation to another state for the experience of visiting three Indian casinos. I found, from what I saw, that the elderly people were the beneficiaries.
We saw people with walkers and one couple, with a husband in a wheel chair. They said if it wasn’t for this casino, we would have no place to have any fun. Seems to me, based on the people I spoke with, people don’t mind having the casinos at all. The Indians there have their rights under control. I feel if that happened here it would be a miracle for the elderly and the counties around San Benito County and a lift to our economy. I am sure my wife and I would enjoy visiting once a week for entertainment. And, I am sure many like us who don’t have many places to entertain themselves would take advantage of this as well. However, the way our leaders are leaning against the casino seems like the majority of the public opinion is also learning against it.
It is my policy and it should be everybody’s policy that the majority should rule. What I have seen is the opposite in the past like when they tried to run over Measure G against the majority and also running against the majority with the Hillside ordinance. I have no problem living or siding with the majority. That makes me comfortable. Everybody should be. It is the democratic way. However, I am never going to see the day that the people of this county will be able to raise their family here and be able to keep them here for lack of a future. We have too many people in this county with a negative attitude towards driving this county in a direction of prosperity. I find that these negative people most probably have no family or don’t like to have them around –selfishness, maybe a little evil. Maybe losers who couldn’t succeed in life.
We, the elderly, who have done so much for everybody, would like a place we could be entertained. It would be appreciated. If not, we have to wait until one day where we have to live in some healthcare center. At least when we visit there, we will see some good samaritans coming in with some music or some entertainment. Sunday, my wife and I took a ride to Gilroy and had lunch and shopped. We saw so many people from Hollister there talking about prosperity. If you don’t see it, take a ride and see it for yourselves. I am sure the economy there is good. Also, unemployment is lower.
Can we learn from that? Just my opinion.
